Be calm and color on

Coloring books aren’t just for kids anymore

If you have fond memories of opening a brand new box of crayons and whiling away the hours with nothing else but a coloring book and your creative spirit to guide you, you’ll be  happy to hear that coloring books aren’t just for kids anymore. Coloring books created for grown ups started to gain popularity in 2015 and the craze shows no sign of slowing down.

Part of the reason adult coloring books are so popular is that they are reported to have actual health benefits, which isn’t surprising since researchers have long recognized the therapeutic qualities of art. In fact, art therapy is known to be helpful among people dealing with a variety of conditions such as depression, dementia, anxiety, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.1

What makes adult coloring books special is that coloring is a simple and fun pastime, it helps you relax and unwind, and it reminds us of those sweet moments we enjoyed as a child. Some say coloring is essentially a form of meditation because it allows you to switch off your brain and focus on what you’re doing instead of all the things that might otherwise be swirling around in your head.

All in all, it’s a pretty great way to spend a few moments of downtime, particularly since eventually you’ll have something beautiful that you made by allowing yourself to just let go and have some creative fun.

If you don’t have pencil crayons or markers lying about you’ll need to purchase those, but as far as what you’re going to color, that’s as simple as a click of the mouse. Sure, there are coloring books for grown ups in pretty much every book store – there are even monthly magazines if you really get into it – but if you want to get a taste of the action before actually purchasing an entire book or magazine, check out these free, printable online adult coloring pages:

While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping those finished coloring pages tucked inside a drawer, they also make beautiful personalized art for your walls and fantastic little gifts or cards.

Imagine how touched a loved one would be to receive one of your colored pages framed and ready for hanging. Dollar stores and craft stores have lovely, inexpensive frames that would be great for this purpose. The back, blank side of a completed coloring page would also be the perfect spot to write a note to someone you love, either for a special occasion or just because. What a perfect gift to find in your mailbox, especially on Valentine’s Day!

Whether you keep your masterpieces for yourself or give them away, enjoy the rediscovery of this wonderful creative process. After all, getting to feel like a kid while getting rid of your adult stresses for a few blissful moments? What could be better than that!
