Online news: YouTube basics

sharing videos online
You know all those cute and crazy cat videos you see online? Chances are they originated on YouTube—the hub for people who like to upload and share videos online. Created in February 2005, YouTube allows people to discover, watch and share originally created videos, according to the website . It’s a way for people and advertisers to connect with other like-minded viewers across the globe.

You don’t need an account to browse and view videos that are posted on YouTube, but if you do sign up for a free account, you’re able to customize your experience while you’re there.

Having an account allows you to subscribe to channels you like (maybe one that posts a new crazy cat video every day) so you never miss any new content, build play lists of your favorite videos so you can watch them whenever you want, and create your own channel so you can upload your personal videos for others to view. Google explains how to subscribe and take advantage of these perks of membership.

Keep in mind that the videos you post on YouTube are public, so anyone can see them. It’s always best to ask permission from anyone featured in your videos before posting them in a public forum. There are also guidelines  for acceptable content and conduct while using YouTube to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

If you’re more interested in viewing than posting, and don’t necessarily care about the perks of having an account, you can simply visit and start browsing! You can opt to watch the recommended videos posted on the home page, or do your own search for a topic that interests you and see what’s out there. For example, a search for how to build a birdhouse yielded this 8-minute tutorial on how to make a window bird box with one clear Plexiglas side that adheres to a window with suction cups so you can see what’s happening inside the birdhouse. This was just one of dozens of video options to choose from!

YouTube is a fun way to spend some extra time, find out more about a topic that interests you, or share your own video creations with the world.
