Partnering for play

Partnering-at-play
As a family-focused and community-spirited organization, it made perfect sense for ForestersTM  to partner with KaBOOM!, a national non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring all kids get the balance of active play they need to thrive. Since the start of our partnership in 2006, Foresters has invested more than $10 million dollars with KaBOOM! in order to achieve our mutual goal of creating a safe place to play within walking distance of every child.

Having a goal that strengthens families and communities is great, but it’s one that couldn’t be reached without the tireless support of our Foresters volunteers. They happily roll up their sleeves and dedicate their time and energy to helping us build playgrounds right across Canada and the United States, giving children in underserved neighborhoods beautiful new places to play.

With the help of our members, agents and employees, Foresters and KaBOOM! will have built over 120 playground by the end of 2015. Over the course of a 15-year lifespan, that means that 4 million children and their families will have had the opportunity to spend quality time together in safe, fun playspaces close to home.

This year, we have 15 playground builds planned – we’ll be visiting the following communities with shovels and slides in hand:

  • New Orleand, Atlanta, Ottawa, Kansas, San Diego, Greater Toronto Area, Portland, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Calgary, Charlotte, New York, Washington DC, Arlington, Baltimore, Louisville and Phoenix.

Members who have helped out at playground builds in the past always seem to comment on how much fun they have meeting new people and working together to create something wonderful for a deserving community. Best of all, it happens in just one day—kind of like magic!

What to expect when you volunteer to build a playground

You don’t need any special skills to participate in a KaBOOM! playground build. If you can take direction and like to have fun, you’re set! A typical build day starts with registration from 7:30-8:30 am followed by a complimentary breakfast. After a warm welcome from the KaBOOM! project manager and instructions from Build Captains, work on the playground begins!

From putting together slides, to planting flowers, to mixing cement, there is a job for everyone of all ages and abilities! If you plan to bring your little ones along, you’ll be happy to know that Foresters hosts a Family Fun Zone to provide children who are too young to participate in the build with a fun, safe place to play while their family members work on building the playground.

After a hearty lunch and last minute finishing touches to the playspace, the day ends with closing announcements and ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the official opening the brand new playground.

Every child deserves a place to play. If you want to lend a hand and help Foresters and KaBOOM! bring a little magic to a community near you, keep an eye on MyForesters.com for the build dates to be posted throughout the summer!
